HOT AIR BALLOON - The Heyday ballooning magazine that launched the first 'Transatlantic' Balloon Race Challenge - a rare collection of magazines.

Published in the 80's, HOT AIR BALLOON was the first magazine of its kind to go on public sale. It was well received, and widely read in many countries. Unfortunately, due to a 'dastardly deed', production ceased - only six editions were published. However, it transpires, that due to content and time frame, it now has a place in the history of ballooning - and is a collector's item.

Writers for this colourful magazine included celebrities such as Per Lindstrand and Don Cameron. Also featured, are Sir Richard Branson, and the late Malcolm Forbes at Balleroy '89, with his unique collection of 'Special-Shape' balloons.

Copies of HOT AIR BALLOON are held by: The British Balloon & Airship Club Museum & Library, the British CAA (Civil Aviation Authority), the 'Forbes' Magazine Archives in New York, and collectors.

In 1989, 789 pilots from around the world were invited to Fraternite '89 - the largest ballooning event in the world - to celebrate 'le Bicentenaire de la Revolution Francaise'. HOT AIR BALLOON was the innovation of professional aeronauts Tony Bolger and John Spearing. They wanted to bring the world of ballooning to the general public - this they did, as co-editors. John Spearing retired after (Volume 1, Number 3).

These two aeronauts were also responsible for bringing to the City of Southampton, England: The Great Southern Balloon Race 1986, and The Great Southern International Balloon Festival 1987. By 1988, it was drawing crowds in excess of 100,000 and had become the largest event of its kind in Europe - it was re-named: Danepak Southampton International Balloon Festival. In 1989, it was finally re-named: Southampton Balloon & Flower Festival - they ran the Festival for the city until 1993.

History will show, that balloon and airship pilots: Tony Bolger and John Spearing, along with Major: Warwick and Belinda Charlton, of Avon Castle, Ringwood, England, presented and launched, the World's first 'Great Transatlantic Balloon Race Challenge' to delegates at the FAI (The Federation Aeronautique International Conference) International Ballooning Committee (CIA), in Paris, 23rd-24th March 1987 - (This race had confirmed and accepted entries from: Canada, Japan, USA, US Virgin Islands, and the United Kingdom).

The FAI granted permission for this race.

THE ROYAL NAVY

'HMS Victory'

'HMS Victory' is the only 18th century ship of the line in the world, and the world's oldest commissioned warship still in use. She is the flagship of the Second Sea Lord, Commander-in-Chief Naval Home Command.
(She was launched in 1765 at Chatham Dockyard, and commissioned in 1778).
